Cleaner Lorries Campaign

The BPEX ‘Cleaner Lorries Campaign’ aims to reduce the risk of disease spread via livestock lorries.
Since October 2009 BPEX has been reviewing industry bio-security standards and one part of this was to seek livestock hauliers’ opinion on the suitability of lorry washing facilities at abattoirs. Hauliers completed a simple assessment sheet reporting back to BPEX for each of their livestock deliveries and BQAP abattoirs were independently reviewed.
Hauliers highlighted a variety of concerns. The main point for action is to make sure abattoir lorry wash facilities are fit for purpose and that good practice is followed – to minimise the risk of disease transmission.
Meetings have been held in the South, North and East of England and the East Midlands this summer with great support from across the supply chain – livestock hauliers, abattoirs, marketing groups, vets and producers all contributed.
Progress
Thirteen of the country's 19 British Quality Assured Pork (BQAP) abattoirs have now provided a lorry wash ‘point of contact’, the latest being Tulip, Brechin.
The point of contact provides a clear line of communication between drivers and abattoirs to ensure that lorry washing facilities are adequate for effective biosecurity.
To date, we have a point of contact from the following abattoirs:
- Cheale Meats, Essex
- Cranswick Country Foods (Norfolk) Ltd, Watton
- Cranswick Country Foods Pl,c Preston
- G Wood & Sons Ltd, Nottingham
- H G Blake (Costessey) Ltd, Norwich
- Tulip, Lancashire
- Dalehead, Spalding
- Tulip, Brechin
- Tulip, Westerleigh
- Vion, West Lothian
- Vion, Malton
- Vion, Wiveliscombe
- Lamberts C & K Group, Eye
