BPEX KT manager Colin Stone said he was confident in the industry’s ability to make positive changes and strengthen biosecurity through improved vehicle wash-out facilities and logistics.
He was speaking at the fourth and final BPEX Lorry Wash Project meeting in York, which was attended by vets, hauliers, breeders and finisher producers. He said: “It is important that, as an entire industry, we strive to make headway in this area, before we are forced to by legislation.”
A key area identified for improvement was timeliness of both the loading of pigs at the farm and tipping at the abattoir. Failure to stick to designated times can cause a back-log of vehicles waiting to use the C&D facilities.
The four regional meetings have increased awareness of the situation and the project’s progress so far, and identified the next steps which BPEX is currently working on.
