Leading to the Institute of Leadership & Management Level 3 First Line Manager Certificate
Programme Overview
This programme has been designed to challenge and develop the skill base of managers to meet the pig industry’s needs.
The process will involve using managers’ experience and knowledge to develop discussion and explore topics. Tasks are used during the programme to test the application of topics and the outcomes will be reviewed against the work environment. Project work and assessments will be set between modules to apply theory learnt, back in the workplace. This will also include two major projects. These all contribute to the fulfilment of the certificate qualification.

Module Duration
With the exception of the first session which will last for two days, each of the sessions will start in the evening and finish the following day. Each module will include dinner and an evening presentation followed by management training, running from 8am to 4pm, the next day.
Pre course work
- Discuss with line manager what skills you and they would like developing as a result of attending the programme.
- Agree with your manager a problem that needs resolving or an improvement you would like to make. This will be developed in part 1 towards your first major assignment
Part 1 - Working Together as a Team
Participants will be better able to –
- Identify their preferred role in a team and how best to use it
- Assess the stage of development of their own team and how this can be progressed
Part 1 - Managing Workload & Solving Problems
Participants will be better able to –
- Identify goals and set priorities to manage time more effectively
- Plan and monitor tasks
- Apply creative techniques to generate options
- Gather and analyse information
- Apply a range of problem solving techniques to real problems they are facing
- Adopt a systematic method of arriving at thoroughly considered decisions
Project work
- Set up & develop content for Work Based Assignment
- Use time log to review time use and identify ways to improve time management
- Review the information you record and identify how you can make better use of it to make decisions
- Complete assessment on Building the Team
- Setup management survey
Part 2 - Leading the Team
Participants will be better able to –
- Identify staff maturity and adopt the most appropriate leadership style to develop and motivate them.
- Review own leadership behaviour and determine actions to enhance it.
Part 2 - Project work
- Review use of leadership styles and recognise when they are being used effectively
- Review with the team the outcomes of your survey and actions to enhance your leadership
Part 3 - Developing Yourself and Your Team
Participants will be better able to –
- Create standards for good practice and agree long-term development objectives for staff.
- Set realistic and measurable interim targets and create action plans.
- Improve people’s performance through coaching and encouragement.
- Conduct one to one meetings to monitor a person’s performance, agree problems and improvement ideas
Part 3 - Project work
- Identify a member of the team and use an appropriate method to develop their performance taking their learning styles into account
- Set up CPD plan and record of activity
- Complete Work Based Assignment to hand in on next module
Part 4 - Motivating the Team
Participants will be better able to –
- Identify peoples motivational needs and actions you can take to satisfy them
- Delegate more effectively
- Design jobs to motivate and create more satisfaction
Part 4 - Project work
- Identify and implement actions to motivate individual team members and provide feedback relevant to their performance
Part 5 - Making Communication Work
Participants will be better able to –
- Identify their central role as a communicator and highlight areas for improvement
- Engender mutual respect by behaving assertively
- Develop questioning and listening skills
Part 5- Project work
Take action to resolve and deal with situations more assertively. Report back on successes and difficulties
Part 6 - Managing Performance - Making Appraisals Work
Participants will be better able to –
- Arrange and conduct appraisal interviews with staff, which create open discussions and frank exchanges
- Understand the value of successful appraisals to themselves, their staff and the business as a whole
- Agree achievable but challenging objectives for the forthcoming period, and help create strategies to achieve them
- Identify their strengths as an appraiser and areas they should try and improve
- Give feedback assertively
Part 6- Project work
- Report back on the success of conducting appraisals
- Identify and agree a change project with your manager ready for developing on the next module
Part 7 - Planning and Managing Change
Participants will be better able to –
- Define clear aims and benefits of a change
- Analyse the forces driving a change and those resisting it from happening
- Use appropriate strategies to manage people with different levels of acceptance of change through the cycle of transition
Part 7- Project work
- Start Change Management Report
- Implement the planned change and report back on progress
Part 8 - Managing Projects
Participants will be better able to –
- Common problems in specifying and planning projects are identified and addressed.
- A systematic project planning process is employed, and workable techniques are used to plan the project to completion.
Part 8 - Project work
- Refine, implement and monitor your project plans
- Report back on the value of project management and what you are delivering as a result
- Quantify the financial implications of the project and the likely savings you will achieve
Part 9 - Working Efficiently
Participants will be better able to –
- Identify those jobs most likely to yield a return from improvement
- Use a range of methods for measuring and recording how work is performed
- Critically examine work methods and develop improvements in efficiency and ergonomics
- Implement changes, measure outcomes and monitor improvements
- Clarify aims and plan a task systematically
- Monitor and record a job using aspects of method study to suggest time, cost or effort saving
Part 9 - Project work
- Review & identify where wastage can be removed report back on the savings that have been made
- Complete Change Management Report and hand in on the next module
Part 10 - Influencing Skills
Participants will be better able to –
- Increase your influence through developing greater rapport with other people
- Develop better solutions by incorporating others ideas
- Listen actively and use questions to persuade
- Use negotiation skills effectively
- Anticipate & counter resistance/objections to new ways of working
Part 10 - Project work
- Identify a situation where you need to influence others. Plan what techniques you will use and what negotiation may be required
Evening Sessions
The evening sessions have been designed to help communication across the different sectors within the industry. The first session will be an introduction to the scheme and a general team building event. Following sessions will include speakers from the different sectors within the industry such as breeding companies, feed companies, veterinary health & assurance schemes, marketing & transport, processing, retail, and a session from outside of the industry. The final session with be an awards evening and presentation of course outcomes to an invited audience.
