Rural Development Programme England

The Rural Development Programme England (RDPE) is a seven year scheme utilising European funding to develop rural businesses in England.

The programme provides varying levels of support for a range of activities with the common aim of helping land-based businesses to improve their competitiveness. In general this support will be at 70% of the costs. The remaining 30% matched funding has to come from private funds ie the people taking part. Levy funds can not be classed as match funds.

Livestock production is specifically targeted in this scheme. Defra have set out three key areas where they believe funding should be directed towards.

These themes are:

  • Competitiveness
  • Nutrient management
  • Animal health and welfare

The funding is being distributed through the Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) across the country (click here to see which region you work in).

As each agency works independently there are slight differences in the way in which the scheme is administered in each region.

On behalf of the pig industry, BPEX has been working closely with each of the regions to ensure there is relevant funding for the skills development of the pig industry.

As a result, BPEX has so far been successful in accessing funding in six of the nine regions, with ongoing talks in the remaining two regions which have relevance to the pig industry. The ninth region is London and not included here.
