The University of Leeds Pig Development Centre is located at Spen Farm, one of the three farms comprising Leeds University Farms, situated roughly equidistant between Leeds and York. The Leeds University Farms occupy an area of 650 acres of mixed cropping. The arable land has various soil types including NVZ and non-NVZ zones which provide an adequate site for slurry disposal.
The pig unit comprises 220 sows on a farrow to finish system with both indoor and outdoor facilities. It is a successful combination of commercial pig farming and a thriving research facility.
During 2005-2006 the unit underwent a programme of development and expansion. This involved construction of additional dry sow, farrowing and weaner-grower accommodation.
