Risk management for sows - 24th August 2010
Staff learned how to recognise a ‘risk sow’ during sow care training at Humberside pig business T Field. In the dry sow yards, they discussed sow behaviour, environment and availability of feed and water, looking for ways to reduce the risk of lameness or illness that can negatively affect productivity.
The
team looked at conformation and body condition scored a group of sows.
Other
key areas covered were:
- What
happens physiologically during gestation, focusing on placenta development and
piglet development
- The
factors affecting sow loss and non-breeding sows (the unit has previously had
quite a high sow mortality – thought to be due to fighting)
- Heat
stress and preparing for winter
The
training session also included a quiz, discussion and questions on sow care
theory in the staff room.
